Inductors, coils, solenoids ... it's the same stuff. If will resist to CURRENT change (like capacitors resist to voltage change) by building a magnetic field.

Basics

Calculate the magnetic field and inductance : http://www.calctool.org/CALC/phys/electromagnetism/solenoid
Works with DC current too (makes a fix magnet)
Winding rule : make nice full layers one on top of the other.
Direction of the magnet : Right hand rule http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-hand_rule
